2024 Toyota Tacoma: The Only Manual-Shift Pickup on the Market
The Tacoma is the only manual-shift pickup on the market.
Toyota offers the 2024 Tacoma with a six-speed manual transmission coupled with a 270-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. The manual Tacoma is irrefutable proof that Toyota still cares about the apparently rarefied buyers who want three pedals. With Jeep dropping the manual-transmission Gladiator, the Tacoma now has the manual-shift pickup market. The Tacoma's manual transmission is only available on four-door, all-wheel-drive models, but it's offered in a variety of trims: the base Work Truck SR ($38,395) as well as the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road (both $43,295). On the SR, the manual and automatic versions are priced the same, but the manual gets 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the automatic gets 228 hp and 243 lb-ft; the free horsepower is enough to motivate us to be flexible with our clutch leg. Conversely, manual versions of higher trim levels see a slight drop in power compared to the automatic -- but there's a financial incentive for the automatic shift: The manual is $1,100 less expensive than the TRD Off-Road model. Predictably, some performance metrics are compromised for the manual truck compared to the automatic. The manual Taco's EPA-estimated fuel economy is 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, down 1 mpg across the board compared to the automatic. Horsepower and torque are down slightly, too, with the manual's 270 hp and 310 lb-ft trailing the non-SR automatic's 278 hp and 317 lb-ft. Toyota has also tweaked the torque curve -- the automatic's peak comes at just 1,700 rpm, while the manual's peak is a more gradual 2,800 rpm. The manual, meanwhile, peaks at just 5,400 rpm, 600 rpm less than the automatic's. Toyota says these tuning tweaks are "related to the manual flywheel," which may be better suited to the more progressive torque curve and lower overall rpm. However, the manual Tacoma is rated to tow 6,400 pounds, the same as the automatic.Manual trucks have been around for decades, but not anymore. This is it: the lone Tocoma and its mechanically dated, charming six-speed manual.
